Artist Statement & Bio
My passion for the arts stems from growing up in a household that was filled with music and inspiration. It was hard finding my own unique talents being the youngest of seven children. Living in a neighborhood and attending a school district that placed little importance on education made it harder for me to recognize my talents. In the 9th grade I moved to Northville and started attending Northville High School. It was there that I discovered my talents in photography and pottery. I also discovered my desire to teach. I find it important to keep the arts alive and reinstall a passion for the arts into today’s youth. Children deserve the opportunity for a well rounded art education and that is why I am pursuing my teaching certificate.
I enjoy creating art and educating about the arts because it makes me happy. It’s a way to relieve stress and express myself without worrying about any criticism. For the last 10 years I’ve had a growing passion for pottery and photography, but I have recently fallen in love with painting and screen printing. I work from my heart and let my hands and eyes guide me. In my photography I look for crisp lines, vivid colors, and interest that lead the viewer’s eyes. In my pottery, I start with an initial idea and let my hands create. My inspirations fall in the beauty of the world and trying to capture it in my work. Being an education major, I am also inspired by my desire to teach. I believe art is one of the most important subjects for children. It’s the only class that allows them to create something from nothing with limited critique.
Teaching is a challenging job with many unique frustrations, but the rewards of teaching are endless. Providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today’s society is a job that should not be taken lightly. I believe that the time and effort teachers place in their students’ education is equally as important as the skills and passion they have for their career. Commendable educators require patience, passion, and devotion; I plan on being just that.
The arts have always been a passion of mine. While many people dream of being successful artists, I find more enjoyment in teaching the arts. Art education is a building block to an individual’s perception and understanding of the world in which we live. It is a continuous learning experience that teaches students to respect and value their own interpretations and to grow from them. People often emphasize the importance of an art education by focusing on the idea that art makes a person more creative and perceptive. A complete art program allows every student to increase positive attitudes towards self, others, and the environment through creative experiences. A well rounded education in the arts stimulates the imagination, develops self-esteem and encourages openness towards the opinions of others. Art offers opportunities to students that are not available through other subjects alone. My goal as a teacher is to encourage passion, creativity, and knowledge of art into all my students.
I have over 60 hours of field observation and have observed various teaching styles and classrooms. Though I’ve learned from all my observations, my knowledge in what is required of a successful teacher is still growing, and will continue to grow. I think that this should be a requirement for all teaches: being able to let their knowledge of teaching continue to grow; learn new techniques, new examples, and new ways to get through to children/students. The skills of being a successful teacher are a gift that one is born with and can only grow by education, experience, devotion, and passion.
